Under the Skin

Under the Skin
(Reprise)
This American x-factor, who helped transform Fleetwood Mac from an interesting British blues band into a monster, plays and sings 98 percent of this album. The influence of Brian Wilson on Buckingham’s multitracked harmonies is ever present, and most effective on “It Was You.” His voice fits many shapes and keys, though its attitude rarely eases from an Orbisonian intensity. His finger-picking is even more deft when there’s three of him. Old mates Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are allowed in to pump up the ending. Listening to Under the Skin requires reduced expectations since almost every tune would benefit from richer backing.
