Letters to the Editor

To the editor,

I've got a large bag of old batteries and a few buckets of paint. I'd like to get this "Household Hazardous Waste" to the appropriate facility, but apparently I'll need to drive out to Bayers Lake on a "selected Saturday" (which by the way, isn't the coming one, because of the long weekend) to do that.

This set up can't make it easy for anyone to get out there with their waste and recyclables, but it's especially hard for green-minded folks like me who rely on their bicycle and the occasional bus ride to get around.

Apparently these facilities are expensive to build, but only 6,000-8,000 households use it's services annually. Make it accessible, and we'll get the most from that investment.

How hard can it be to have drop off bins around the HRM, plus the occasional pick-up?

As a bonus, pick-up sites should create increased awareness of the HHW depot and how Haligonians can dispose of their HHW.
