Letters to the Editor

Stick with me on this. I wanted to say something in response to the "Gentrifuckation" cover story a few weeks ago but, frankly, realized that I was more confused by it than anything. (With its barely veiled endorsement of half assed graffiti campaigns and simultaneous acknowledgement of the need for neighborhood improvement I wasn't even sure what the message was.) It wasn't until this past issue's "Fresh Paint" article that I realized what was really getting to me.

In both these articles the "North End" according to The Coast is a four by four block area with maybe a couple of hundred people in it at most. The “Fresh Paint” article is literally talking about three apartments and one billboard. That's fine but this habit of plucking the few, the only, examples of either topic and presenting them as some sort of sweeping trend is making mountains out of a couple of street corners. Halifax is small, but not that small. Broaden your view before generalizing across it.

What should be done with the dead agave plant?

  • Chop it up and chase it with lime and salt
  • Cast it in bronze and put it where Cornwallis was
  • Burn it ritually for biomass
  • Plant it in every white girl's succulent garden
