Letters to the Editor | Opinion | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

I’m writing to let you know I enjoyed the cover article “On the Road” in last week’s Coast (June 15). I am an avid cyclist and am proud of my choice for environment, economical and health reasons. I can also sympathize with many of the interviewees- I’ve been yelled at, honked at, run off the road and fallen prey to many a pothole and grate cover running parallel with my bike tires.

I wanted to call attention to an excellent article I read in the Ecology Action Centre’s publication Between the Issues titled PUTTING OUR MONEY WHERE OUR FEET ARE by Laena Garrison. It speaks to HRM’s regional plan and how they want to “invest” $31.5 million municipal and provincial dollars on two initiatives (to widen Chebucto Road and to construct a 9.9km hwy connecting Hwys 102 & 103). These projects only bring more cars into the city, which means more traffic jams, more pollution, more car/bike accidents, more parking lots...more yuck. Instead we need to invest in more sustainable modes of transportation (e.g. public transit, bike lanes, etc). I strongly encourage everyone to read this article (you can find Between the Issues at the Ecology Action Centre- 2705 Fern Lane, libraries and various stores around town). Once you’ve read it, send a copy to your city councillor (you can find out who your rep is at: http://eservices.halifax.ca/districtLookup/). Let them know you’re concerned.

Sincerely, Becca GreenHalifax, NS
