Dear Editor,
“I have more things to worry about right now, I don’t have time to save the world,” seems to be the common excuse for people not taking even a moment out of their daily lives to open their tired eyes, see that Mother Nature is pissed off, and do something that will make her change her mind about giving us all the mighty spanking that we so richly deserve.
Now, a very dear friend of mine spit this same comment out at me on the eve of Earth Day, my most revered celebration. Such ignorant justification of “thinking in the here and now” perfectly paints a moving picture of how we came to be at the brink of wiping ourselves out through ruthless exploitation of resources and disregard of all forms of life.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m pretty lucky to have enough time on my hands to be able to read independent news and environmental websites, and it is this spare time and effort that has afforded me an eye-opening environmental epiphany.
While the Handsome Harper government fells our Kyoto agreements with an industrious hack and slash, Mother Nature continues to be ravaged. As a concerned parent, I’m inclined to suggest that the Canadian population takes a moment out of its hectic here and now to take a look at what’s really going on, figure out who’s responsible for it, and demand that something is done in order for us to leave our children a planet that will continue to lend them life. And maybe, if enough of us can raise our voices as a collective, the Harper government will finally get the message that environmental refuse is about to really hit the fan.
