In a Province that was the birthplace of Reasonable Government, I am surprised that we are talking about turning a portion of Argyle Street into a parking lot for our venerable City Councillors. Actually that’s a lie; this doesn’t surprise me at all. About 8 years ago I had the chance to meet a fine example of our bloated bureaucracy. I noticed a smallish man, with a balding head and glasses pull his car it within inches of the Cenotaph on the Grand Parade. As a serving member of the Canadian Forces (now retired) I approached the man to suggest that this was not the place to park out of respect for the war dead. This little man then went on to prove that other than his frame, and mind, he was perhaps compensating for other small features. He told me that he was a City Councillor and that he had a right to park there, and suggested that I get a job and pay my taxes. We had a loud exchange that I filled with a few expletives, and ended with me suggesting an activity he could go and do. I never knew his name, and have no idea if he is still a Councillor. It is clear however that his large ego lives on in the hearts and minds of all City Councillors who think that they are too good to walk a block of two, to their place of work like the rest of the downtown workforce.
