To the editor,
I moved to Halifax from Montreal just under two years ago on that fateful weekend when Nova Scotians we’re given the chance to vote for or against Sunday shopping. Starting my new life here I remember how let down I felt with the outcome. In Montreal I was extremely used to having the option of doing my errands at just about any point of the weekend. On Saturday stores here are always the same situation, half the amount of people as in Montreal but twice as panicked to get it all done in one day. It’s utterly frustrating for customers and completely unfair that store/business owners how have to resort to loop holes to service the obvious demand for more shopping hours. There have been line-ups! People who voted against drive to Moncton. wtf!Can you say double standard? You can go the drug store, you can go see a movie, you sure as hell can go drink and gamble, but if you’re out of garlic or a box a screws on Sunday, basically you’re screwed. Does no one see the hypocrisy here?I feel most politicians are out of touch and probably have staff who carry out their day to day errands. It’s 2006, it’s sad but people are busier and rushed more these days and we should have the choice. If you want to go to church on Sunday, go! If you want to invite friends over and have a relaxing afternoon doing nothing, call ‘em up! And if you own a store, don’t open on Sunday, and your competition will pick up the slack. But why we have only one day to get everything done is beyond me.
