I knew I was right!
For older readers, I'd like to bring them up to date on an issue I had with your paper way back when Theo Moudakis was exhibiting cartoons at the Economy Shoe Shop. The cartoons were not published in any newspaper because they were considered too controversial. But this was supposedly what would pique the interest of "art" lovers and the elite clique at the Economy Shoe Shop.

I took exception to one cartoon in particular drawn by Mou and shown in your paper, that portrayed the Reform Party as RETARDS. Now, I think the word "retarded," used in a legitimate context, is fine. However, used as an epithet, as Mou and many insensitive people use it, I think deserves to be condemned. Your paper doesn't, or didn't, condemn its use and I protested VERY vociferously. In fact, when Mou was scheduled to give a showing at the local library, I protested to the library management suggesting the library should be showing the best of cartoons, not the worst.

Mou accused me of trying to put him out of work! HA! Poor little Mou.

At the time I spoke with Coast editor Kyle Shaw, if you can call it speaking. Now it's 2019, many years later, and I would like to bring to your attention the fact that Mou apologized to PM Trudeau for a "thoughtless" cartoon he recently drew and for which he was roundly criticized.

His apology is useless as far as I'm concerned, knowing his history. But I'd just like to say to your paper and Mr. Shaw, I told you so. Fred Bushor, Eastern Passage

Plow the streets!
The city should enforce—or maybe it's revise—its specifications for the snow plows clearing streets. Road plows should be required to clear to within one foot (30cm) of the curb, otherwise the space for parking and/or driving down the street gets limited.

Below is a picture from the snowfall of March 4. In the foreground you can see the spot I cleared for my car after the plow finished its work, so I could park close to the curb and be less likely to suffer a sideswipe from passing vehicles. In the background is the drift the plow left behind, measured by my shovel that's over four feet long.

If my side of the street is narrower by four feet, then the street overall may be eight feet narrower. That's unacceptable. The other day a fuel truck couldn't make a delivery because the street was too narrow with vehicles parked on both sides. This could also be a safety issue as firetrucks and ambulances may be stopped from gaining passage on the street. —P S, Halifax

Steve's so hot!
Editor's note: After our February 28 cover story about former Halifax Mooseheads player and current Street Legal star Steve Lund came out, Lund thanked writer Melissa Buote and described photographer Alyson Hardwick as "incomparable" when he posted the cover image on his Instagram (@leven_stund). Then Lund's Insta-fans started commenting—on the story, the photo and some other stuff too.
