Staying nice
Editor's note: In last week's Arts section, Stephanie Johns wrote a story called "Reid K. White and the art of the everyday" about a local artist who publicly distributes his creations. "Hung on a handful of telephone poles, White's unique handcrafted pieces feature beads, stones, ceramics, metal, colourful plastic embellishments—whatever he has lying around, really," Johns wrote. "There's usually a donation box nearby (if it hasn't been swiped) and a message—wishing that tourists, or anyone who loves heartfelt art, will take this reminder of Halifax home with love." Then our readers gave some love back.

I love these and have kept several from when I lived in Halifax. I have one early one, from like 2007 when I was a NSCAD student, from before he started hanging them up. He'd just have a pile of them in a milk crate. It says "Stay Nice."

Hold off on Uber
Rideshare will NOT solve the problem that's existed in the taxi industry for the last several decades, it will only complicate it ("One step closer to Uber, baby, is one step closer to you," Reality Bites post by Caora McKenna, December 13). Taxis and ridesharing share the same model: their drivers are independent operators of their umbrella entity. They are within their means of setting their own work hours at any given hours/day of the week.
This will only flood more conventional vehicles onto the industry when we need more accessible "ride-for-hire" vehicles. HRM recently approved the addition of 600 conventional roof-light taxi licenses on top of the existing 999 licenses. On the same note, there are less than 24 active, accessible roof-light licensed taxi operators. Let's wait until HRM completely issues the 600 new roof-light conventional taxi licenses first, before allowing active ridesharing.
