Letters from Wingfield Farm

When: July 15-Aug. 1 2010
Price: 1-877-845-1341,
After twenty-odd years, it’s obvious that actor Ron Beattie has not tired of playing stockbroker-turned-farmer Walt Wingfield. Nor are audiences tired of watching him. Beattie has played Walt (I’d like to think we’re on a first name basis. He’s that kind of guy.) in seven Wingfield plays, yet his slow, impish smile as he leads the audience to a particularly delicious punch line conveys the feeling that the material has not staled at all for Beattie. Playwright Dan Needles has such a way with words that he can conjure up everything from dying ducks to huge draft horses out of thin air. Chances are you’re already familiar with the cast of eccentric characters (all played by Beattie) who inhabit Persephone Township, but it’s fun to go back to the beginning with this, the first play in the series. And there is no better place to see it than in the bucolic Annapolis Valley. –Kate Watson
