Last February, Laura Merrimen thought she was saying so long to Halifax, at least for a little while. She planned to set up shop in Montreal following a tour with fellow singer-songwriter Kelly Sloan, but plans changed. After getting word that she'd received a grant to assist with her next record, she was eastward bound. With about 20 unrecorded songs in hand, Merrimen enlisted the help of Brian Murray (her drummer and producer) and bassist Mike Farrington to get things started. "Both Mike and Brian are fundamental elements in the sound and nurtured the vibe I wanted to create," says Merrimen, who says they didn't want to make a country album. "The three of us raised a little magic a few times." Now, after adding some finishing touches, Merrimen and her band are closing in on a final product, an album you can hear a sample from on Tuesday night. "I guess the album is the ending chapter to the last couple of years of my life in Halifax, if this were a book."

Tuesday October 11, The Carleton, 1685 Argyle Street, $10, 9pm
