LA Noire (Rockstar)

PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

LA Noire is one of the most impressive games in years. Not because of the graphical horsepower or the run-and-gun gameplay, but the realism and emotional attachment make it a gem to play. The player is Cole Phelps, a WWII hero who wants to make a difference in the LAPD. Starting as a beat cop, you eventually impress your superiors and become a detective. The world of 1940s LA is recreated with amazing accuracy, right down to the Hollywoodland sign. The character animations are even more impressive---facial recognition technology captures every twitch, blink and wrinkle on the actors’ faces. Finding clues, interrogating witnesses and piecing things together is the primary goal, and it’s executed extremely well. There are great action sequences, which are more like set pieces, but still fun to play. LA Noire achieves next generation goals with current generation hardware. The style and feel of this game is incredible and anyone who loves the film noir genre should play this game.
