Tour de France Soundtracks

Published October 02, 2003.KraftwerkTour de France Soundtracks (EMI)To listen to this is to understand music as the breath of technology, not some human ideal to which technology aspires. If not the inventor of techno, the group is its embodiment, and Kraftwerk’s first album in 17 years displays a clarity and range of sounds likely to be imitated and sampled anew. There is less singing and more voice-box than on 1978’s The Man-Machine; a vulnerability is missing and with it any cuteness derived from imagined robots. This makes the werk less playful. —Doug Taylor
