Kontravoid (Pretty Pretty)

The bastard by-product of an affair with Crystal Castles, ex-touring drummer Cam Findlay’s solo recording project Kontravoid mixes the desolate electronica of The Human League, while channeling a vocal prowess straight from the grave of Ian Curtis. On its self-titled debut, Kontravoid creates a sonic landscape filled with atmospheric synths and down-tempo drum machines. But this isn’t your average post-punk revivalist doom and gloom. Findlay provides an entirely thoughtful approach to his synthesized suites, using analogue hardware that simply couldn’t be recreated with your average microKORG or soft-synth. Lead singles “Forgotten” and “Dead Eagles” carry the same haunting weight of a Disintegration B-side, while the playful “Age of Descent” makes the most bombastic tracks on The Downward Spiral seem tame in comparison. This is truly a gothic album.
