Kim Beggs Sure Thing

When: Sat., Aug. 1, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $8
Communal campfire sing-a-longs with fellow tree planters first inspired Kim Beggs to pick up a guitar and sing a tune. In '91, she moved to Whitehorse on what was supposed to be a short trip to visit her sister---and to teach herself a new instrument---but never left. The Yukon's rawness and communal camaraderie attracted her, and its characteristics are evident in her twangy, old-time tinged roots music. Her 2006 album, Wanderer's Paean, ranked her as the top Canadian artist at American folk radio in March, and was the most-played Canadian album. Beggs is playing at The Company House this Saturday before she heads back to the studio to record her next album, but if you miss her she's also playing at the Lunenburg Harbour Folk Festival from August 6 to 9. –Holly Gordon
