Re: “Chives Canadian Bistro

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Chives recently for his birthday; it was a first time for both of us. We had heard very good things about the food there, and we were not disappointed. I had the spinach salad and the PEI beef duo, which came with a Risotto Florentine. The beef was cooked to perfection, and everything was so flavorful. My boyfriend had the chowder and the lamb, and he had nothing but good things to say about both dishes. We had heard that the portions were large, and this is absolutely true; we were certainly well-fed.

The service was also impeccable. The waiter seemed very knowledgable about the food, and was able to make recommendations easily. Our food arrived to us piping hot, even with ample time between courses.

The only downside to the restaurant is the atmosphere. The decor is disappointing, and the only thing I could compare it to is that restaurant in the mall that is only slightly better than the food court. There is such potential there, but we found the decor actually depressing. Perhaps some nice tablecloths, mirrors behind the banquette seating so the person facing it doesn't have to stare at a blank wall, and more elegant furnishings would be nice. One of our favorite places to eat is The Bicycle Thief, and we find the atmosphere feels like being in someone's home, instead of a sad little restaurant.

I think we would add Chives to our favorites list for Halifax restaurants if the decor was updated a bit and made to feel more expensive. For the price you pay for the food, we were just expecting a bit more.
