Kate Reid tells it like it is

The Vancouver folk artist gets her feet wet with east coast fans.

If you had asked Kate Reid 10 years ago if she'd be a full-time musician in 2010, she may have laughed at you. "Music wasn't even on my radar," Reid says, explaining that she finished her teaching degree in 2000 despite knowing the first day she stepped into teacher's college that she didn't want to be there. "It was too terrifying for me to open up that book." Seven years of searching and therapy later, Reid finally began turning the pages to discover two loves: music, and humour. Now she weaves the two full-time, writing folk music that speaks to both gay and straight communities while using tongue-in-cheek humour that's evident in her song titles---"Emergency Dyke Project," "The Only Dyke at the Open Mic," "I'd Go Straight for Ridley Bent,"---and lyrics---"'Cause I kissed a girl and I liked it too/In fact I've kissed a few in my days and so how come I'm not famous for it yet?". It's not all for adults, either. After getting fan mail from "almost politically savvy elementary kids," Reid interviewed about 30 families with kids and queer parents and is going to use the material for an album focused on their situations. "There's not really an album out there that talks about queer families, and kids with their queer families," Reid explains. "There's a lot of homophobia in schools, even though we've come a long way." No matter your sexual orientation, Reid's show will speak to you.
