Douglas Coupland

Published December 07, 2006.JPodDouglas CouplandRandom HouseI’ll admit this isn’t my favourite Coupland book—it lacks the intensity and ingenuity of Hey Nostradamus. More like Microserfs: The Return. I felt slightly overconsumed by Coupland’s overplayed themes of techno-commercialization. But maybe that’s the point. That said, I still laughed out loud at this story about Ethan and his merry band of video game workers instructed to add a cuddly turtle into their latest game. (Coupland writes himself in as a character. Hilarious.) Designed more like an art installation—the story is interspersed with pages of prime numbers, pi to 100,000 digits and all 972 three-letter Scrabble words—the zeitgeist of Canadiana culture has succeeded once again.Sue Carter Flinntype: bookcategory: best of 2006
