Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate

Faya (Cumbancha Discovery)

joe-sekou.jpg

Hip-hop and African artists fire up their games to create a unique, arresting alloy. Driscoll is a US-born, UK-based rapper and beatmeister. Guinea native Kouyate steps out from his family band, Ba Cissoko, to drive the kora into new dimensions. His instrument, a West African harp, benefits from varying degrees of tension and amplification. Kouyate’s cascade of notes on “Lady,” backed by Driscoll’s wah-wah guitar, befit the latters’ avalanche of words. “Faya” is another highlight, a dub remix making every layer count. “New York” gets a staccato shout-out. World music gets a crashing energy bump.
