Jessica Korderas: Isolation

Looking at artist Jessica Korderas' artwork titled Isolated Thoughts fulfills that need to be a nosy neighbour. The four-story, skinny brick apartment building stands unassuming from its outside windows, with the art of people and spaces painted on a thin, polyester film, then layered in acrylic resin, giving it a 3D and glassy appearance. If you peer around the corner of the 21-inch-tall building to see behind-the-scenes, you'll find a little girl playing dolls with a hyena, and a voluptuous woman dressed in a corset and garter, posing on a stool beside her untended laundry---amongst other secrets. "I wanted to push my interest in the physical divide of an apartment building to a more surreal level," writes Korderas. "I feel like when you are inside a building, you don't think about the structure as a whole, and it is very easy to forget that you are actually surrounded by people…I chose to make cross sections of buildings full of random things that came to mind to emphasize the (sometimes extreme) situations that can be right next door to each other." Korderas' works on isolation were born of her recent move to Halifax, and the isolated feeling that came with living in a city for the first time---surrounded by people, she says still felt alone.
