It is easy being green

Earth Day is April 22, so spend the day with these simple eco-themed activities.

It's not news that our planet is in trouble, but it can be hard to know what to do about it. This Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day—meaning it's the perfect time to stop wondering what the best thing you can do is and just decide to do SOMETHING to help our overheating home. Here are three ideas to get you started:

1. Attend a litter-collecting party
A couple Halifax 'hoods are making the most of spring weather finally arriving and are spending a few hours on Sunday packing up litter. Join them in cleaning up the Halifax Common from 10:30am-1:30pm on April 22 (bring a bag and some gloves!) or take part in cleanups on Agricola Street (meeting at Makenew Curated Thrift from 10am-12pm) and Gottingen Street (meeting outside the North Memorial Library at 9am).

2. Up-cycle some art

Artist Jane Whitten's current Mary E. Black Gallery exhibit explores how marine garbage devastates coastal environments. While the show is on view until May 13, you can catch her panel on trash in the ocean at the Centre for Craft Nova Scotia, April 22 at 1pm. A workshop showing crochet-lovers how to make sea stars out of potentially polluting plastic bags follows, and you can read the full details here.

Over at Argyle Fine Art, meanwhile, artist Kim Danio hosts a workshop that'll show attendees how to craft a frog sculpture out of a reclaimed shoe. Get more details—including how to register—here.

3. Party by candlelight
The Red Stag Tavern is doing its own sorta Earth Hour thing and shutting all the lights off so you can channel your inner Springsteen and dance in the dark from 5pm 'till close on April 22. Glowsticks are encouraged, but we say forget the single-use plastic accessories to keep the theme stronger. Catch all the details here.
