Intimate Apparel is an intricately woven tale that’s emotionally and visually spellbinding. While it brilliantly captures a particular situation, time and place---the stark realities of African American women in turn-of-the-century New York--- it also tells a universal story of desire and betrayal. Esther, in a rich performance by Raven Dauda, is a talented seamstress whose work makes her intimate with both socialites and prostitutes. Although outwardly plain, Esther‘s beauty shines from within. She shares her passion for fine fabrics with an Hasidic shopkeeper (Jeff Schwager, in a delightful turn), and their unspoken mutual attraction makes for some of the most moving scenes in the play. Actor Kevin Hanchard manages to make George, the honey-tongued rogue who turns Esther’s world upside down, both despicable an understandably human. Between the nuanced acting, the brilliant two-level set and the exquisite costumes, this production is as dazzling as the finest silk or embroidered satin. –Kate Watson
