Immaculate Machine

Ones and Zeroes

Something’s brewing over there on the left coast. So many bands hailing from the Pacific come off sounding urgent, frenetic. (You can probably blame the New Pornographers’ Mass Romantic for getting it started.) The Van City trio Immaculate Machine — Brooke Gallupe (guitar), Kathryn Calder (keyboards) and Luke Kozlowski (drums) — have known one another a long time, and the simpatico that comes with such friendships is evident. This band is tight and nimble, but ultimately suffers from the tinny sound and squirrely pace of so many post-punk/death-disco bands. But there are good tunes here, especially the ones sung by Calder, who sounds like she’s fronting a Martha and the Muffins tribute band on “Broken Ship” — a good thing.
