I’ll Seize The Day Tomorrow

by Jonathan Goldstein (Penguin Canada)

For fans of his great CBC Radio show, Wiretap, Jonathan Goldstein’s I’ll Seize the Day Tomorrow is a perfect dose of Canada’s most lovable sad bastard. The book is Goldstein’s musings and daily interactions for the year leading up to his 40th birthday. Like Wiretap, I’ll Seize the Day Tomorrow showcases his sardonic humour and his ability to make daily anxiety-fueled existential crises totally relatable, while delightfully silly: “...40 is like beginning the second half of a 12-inch sub: during the first half you feel like you have all the sandwich in the world, like there will never be time where you aren’t cramming sandwich into your face; but then comes the second half and the end is in sight.” Surrounded by a wacky cast of friends and family in Montreal, including his well-meaning dad and borderline abusive fake-manager Gregor, Goldstein manages to be the butt of every joke, yet you’d still love to take him out for a smoked meat sandwich, and hear all about his day.
