Hooked on Power

Craig Francis Power's emerging artist exhibit at the AGNS is disturbingly funny.

When you think of hooked rugs you might think of little old ladies hunched over pre-made patterns or folk-art scenes—not exactly the stuff of artistic rebellion. That's because you haven't seen Craig Fancis Power's emerging artist exhibit at the AGNS yet. Get ready to never look at hooked rugs the same way again. The featured pieces range from the truly disturbing—like "Troublesome Girl," a woman holding a knife in one hand and a severed head in the other—to the plainly hilarious "God Shits On My Head" (I'll let you guess what that one's about), "Puking Cat" (an explosion of green yarn tumbling from its mouth and out on to the floor) and "Fun" (pictured far right) two rugs, one that has a man peeing with beer bottles dancing over his head, and a long string of yellow yarn that connects him to the other rug that spells "FUN." It's surprising, perplexing and comic at every turn with sinister undercurrents emphasized by the profanity-laced murmurs coming from "Fuck You, Rooms," the video installation that has Power cursing at the Newfoundland art gallery on loop. Together, the exhibit creates an interesting tension between his unconventional art and the institutions that might otherwise ignore or dismiss it, complicated by the fact that this is exactly where it all ended up, after all.
