Three broken but fascinating characters are at the centre of French playwright Gerald Sibleyras’ comedy Heroes. They are a trio of war vets who jest and quarrel on the terrace of the veterans’ home (a beautifully designed set by Sarah O’Brien) where they are destined to live out their lives. The dapper and charming Henri (Ed Thomason) and the sweet but very paranoid Philippe (Ben Stone) are long-time residents who are joined by the aristocratic and caustic Gustave (Michael Ferguson). In spite of their varied infirmities, the friends plot one final, ill-conceived venture into the outside world. Even though their situation is inherently sad, the play is filled with witty one-liners and gentle laughs. And while the story seems like it ends a little abruptly, it is on a lovely, poetic note.
