Westwood rises to the occasion.

It’s no axe-throwing cafe, but there might be a community oven replacing the delicious bakery smells from the now-closed Ben’s site on Quinpool Road.

Preliminary designs for the location were presented at a public meeting this past weekend, and include a mix of town houses, apartments and retail space on Quinpool Road and Pepperell and Shirley Street.

SignalHFX reporter Francis Tessier-Burns writes that some ideas floated at the public meeting included a community stone oven in an open green space, or even housing the “Life” public art installation left homeless after the bakery’s closure.

Danny Chedrawe’s Westwood Developments bought the 10,000 square metre site after back in November, 2015 after Canada Bread Co. vacated the 100-year-old bakery and left 105 employees out of work.

Final designs still have to be submitted to regional council for approval.
