Hannah Thomson gets real

Pretty Picture Friend opens at FRED, telling stories through cellphone captures.

  • Thomson's cellphone scenery.

The spontaneous photos you snap with your cellphone tend to be discarded or unappreciated, but photographer and Halifax native Hannah Thomson is doing the opposite with hers. "When I am working professionally I am always thinking about light, detail, equipment settings, perspective, context," says Thomson, whose Pretty Picture Friend is a collection mainly made up of more casual, impromptu shots taken on her phone. "My cell- phone is with me wherever I go, its camera has become the one that I use the most, due to its accessibility. There's very little user control and cellphone cameras produce distortions that are not in sync with reality." As part of Photopolis, the exhibit is bringing Brooklyn-based Thomson back home to where her career began (with The Coast!) to share snippets of her everyday life, shot from PEI to France, capturing landscapes, self portraits and all the little details in between.

Oct 1-Nov 12, FRED, 2606 Agricola St, opening reception Oct 1, 7-9pm
