Hanna delivers thrills, teeth

Fairy tale/action thriller has a lot going for it

Hanna is a lot of things. Its surface is suggested in the trailer: Saoirse Ronan is the titular teen, raised since diapers to be a polyglot killer by her father, Erik (Eric Bana), hiding in snowbound wastes from CIA nasty and dental hygiene obsessive Marissa (Cate Blanchett) until she's old enough to face up to the secrets of her origins and kick Bourne-like ass. It's also a canny reinterpretation of a number of Grimm fairy tales, with the girl, her woodsman father and the wicked witch all playing their roles. Beyond that, it's a lovely coming-of-age story, where a sequestered girl learns the delicious appeal of modern life in a European travelogue, soundtracked by itchy Chemical Brothers beats. If Hanna doesn’t all work all the time, the combination of elements still makes for big movie-going pleasure, one of the year’s best so far.
