Hundreds of people have been streaming through Halifax MP Megan Leslie's office on Gottingen Street today to sign condolence books for Jack Layton's family. Layton, the federal NDP leader, died yesterday in his Toronto home.

I happened to be waiting for the bus outside Leslie's office yesterday evening---the office is next to the bus stop closest to The Coast's office---when several well-wishers stopped by the closed constituency office to pin notes to the door. So many people had done so over night that Leslie decided to put a poster of Layton's visage on the door, and people were filling that up with good-byes as well.

I only stopped by the office for five minutes today, but in that short time several dozen people had come by.

The condolence books will be sent to Layton's wife, Olivia Chow.
