Next week, Haligonians won't have to skip town to get to the beach---the beach is coming to us. A whopping 2,000 tonnes of sand will be dumped on the Halifax Waterfront, burying the Salter Street parking lot and transforming the hunk of pavement into world-class beach volleyball courts. Thanks to Derek Martin (president of Sports & Entertainment Atlantic), these courts will host the world's best young beach volleyball players, who'll dig in to compete for international bragging rights. The tournament welcomes male and female pairs from 28 countries, including Brazil, China, Italy, Russia and the US, as well as hundreds of delegates and of course, sports enthusiasts. Matches kick off on Wednesday, when the qualification rounds take over all four courts and entrance is free for the community, all day. And it's pretty easy to continue to cheer for Canada on the cheap over the long weekend, tickets start as low as $10. Dear mother nature, please co-operate. Love, The Coast's volleyball fans.
