Mo Kenney just nabbed her first Juno nomination

First awarded in 1970, the Juno Awards are the Canadian Grammys, a marker of musical achievement based on sales, radio play and popularity in national and international markets. Usually, the Junos represent the best in Canadian music. And this year, more than in the last decade, some of the largest artists in the whole damn world (the Biebs, Drake and The Weeknd) have been Canadian artists, record-breaking and dominating the global charts. Yet it's been awhile since little old Halifax has equally produced so many talented, diverse and nationally recognized artists. But this year is our year! Announced this morning, our local nominees include:

Mo Kenney (In My Dreams), Adult Alternative Album of the Year

Joel Plaskett (The Park Avenue Sobriety Test), Adult Alternative Album of the Year

Old Man Luedecke (Domestic Eccentric), Traditional Roots Recording of the Year

Ria Mae ("Clothes Off"), Single of the Year

Jerry Granelli Trio (What I Mean Now), Jazz Album of the Year

These Halifax artists are nominated alongside Drake ("Hotline Bling" for Single of the Year, plus Album of the Year, Artist of the Year and Rap Recording of the Year), The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Metric (Group of the Year), Buffy Sainte-Marie, Dallas Green, and independent artists like Daniel Romano and SonReal (playing Halifax with Classified on March 18), and the controversial name-unchanged Viet Cong. Read the full list here.

Juno Week begins on March 28 in Calgary and the Juno Awards will air on April 3 on CTV with performances by The Weeknd, Aleissa Cara, Shawn Mendes and more. This year's inductee into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame is Burton Cummings, the lead singer of The Guess Who. Congratulations to all the nominees and huge congrats to our Halifax all-stars.
