Guided by Voices - The Electrifying Conclusion

Guided by Voices - The Electrifying Conclusion
(Sonic Unyon)
Perhaps only the serious Guided by Voices fan could sit through this more than once. Clocking in at over four hours, The Electrifying Conclusion is much more than just a bunch of songs to keep the night going. Sure, 63 songs from a 21-year career would be more than enough for most. But then there is also the parade of former band members, from Tobin Sprout to Jim Greer (who gets an envious “the guy who fucked Kim Deal” introduction). And there are Pollard’s rants — his father’s skepticism about his son’s new career (“Aren’t there enough crappy bands out there?”) — or boasting of how fans were selling their Pixies tickets on eBay to get to this gig. And, of course, there is the drinking, which proves to be comical at times — Pollard giving away beer and tequila shots for fear of getting too drunk and guitarist Nate Farley getting wasted yet still (perhaps miraculously) able to kick out the jams. Save the obligatory “reunion tour” yet to be scheduled sometime in 2012, this was the last hurrah for GBV. And the nostalgia was not lost on the packed house that lingered, then begrudgingly filed out of the venue at 3:30am New Year’s Day to encounter its first glimpse of a GBV-less 2005.
