Grown Ups

Excluding Punch-Drunk Love, what Adam Sandler movies are you willing to go to the mattresses for? Maybe 1995’s Billy Madison or 1996’s Happy Gilmore? But could those be youthful indiscretions, where Sandler’s goofball-pursuing-his-pleasure shtick felt more like thrilling wish fulfillment than an affront to mature sensibility? In Grown Ups, even Sandler has given in to the weight of responsibility and time. He plays the most mature and successful of a band of long-time buddies (played by a phalanx of his early ’90s SNL co-stars) meeting up over the July 4th weekend. It’s kind of funny, which isn’t all that surprising considering what they are working with: Rob Schneider’s asinine, frying-pan face, David Spade’s unironic bob haircut and Maria Bello’s virtuoso lack of dignity. –Hillary Titley
