Gogol Bordello

Trans-Continental Hustle (American Recordings)

Eugene Hütz and his merry and mad band of musicians, collectively known as Gogol Bordello, are several albums into their musical revolution. “Revolution is internal/Evolution isn’t over, isn’t over,” proclaims Hütz, the band’s lyricist/vocalist/guitarist, on “Raise the Knowledge.” With Rick Rubin producing, Gogol Bordello’s live, genre-erasing energy is distilled but not diluted. Just listen to “My Companjera,” “Immigraniada (We Comin’ Rougher)” and “Break the Spell” to hear how the band combines two ideas of east in their music: gypsy music of Eastern Europe, Balkan sounds and Russian party songs with punk from the eastern seaboard of the US. A world party well worth attending.
