Getaway

There’s one decent shot in Getaway, a white-knuckle, three-minute chase on busy roads with the camera mounted on the car's bumper. That scene feels like a shot of pure adrenaline after the exhaustingly boring 80-minutes before it in this rinky-dink heist flick. Ethan Hawke is a better adjusted Ryan Gosling from Drive, who, after his wife is kidnapped, is forced into a busy night of errands for a criminal mastermind on the other end of a phone. Jon Voight is mostly lips and teeth, coordinating Hawk's evening while slurping down martinis and tip-tap-typing away at his laptop. Selena Gomez is tremendously miscast as a streetwise hacker genius heiress who improbably ends up along for the ride. At first, tasks like "drive onto that skating rink" are so willfully chaotic that it almost seems Voight's bored rich man is playing his own real-life Grand Theft Auto; a premise cleverer than the sheer stupidity on the screen. —Jacob Boon
