Get internationally involved

We couldn’t help but notice one omission from the Get Involved Guide: the international sector.

Dear Tim Bousquet and your slacker audience,

As a local non-profit, we were gleeful to see your Get Involved Guide grace the cover of The Coast last week (Jan. 29). We loved the cliche-resistant tone of the article, which catered to your average semi-apathetic “slackers” looking for info, not the warm-fuzzies. We couldn’t help but notice one omission, however: the international sector.

You repeatedly point out that your “scattershot list” is far from complete, and rectify your oversights by inviting left-out organizations to be added to the online volunteer database. We agree that an incomplete list is wholly understandable given the scope of the topic---thanks to Halifax’s throng of arts buffs, activists, community enthusiasts and dedicated do-gooders, compiling a full list of volunteer opportunities would be ambitious.

But a whole sector teeming with interesting opportunities for getting involved is excluded from this guide. Halifax’s organizations and individuals committed to international cooperation are vibrant and dynamic. To maintain this vibrancy, they depend on volunteers and community members to keep their “think global, act local” mandate chugging forward.

The international sector’s got something for the whole family---from Canada World Youth to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers-to-Grandmothers groups. And to those lazy-bones you targeted---you don’t have to leave the peninsula to get involved in international issues. Making connections between local and global themes might be one of the most significant things that the international sector strives to achieve.
