Gentleman Deluxe

Deluxe Anthems (independent)

Dammien Alexander of Philadelphia, adopting Halifax as home, is a man of many names. He goes by Dame Alexander and his current project/alias Gentleman Deluxe, his third release following Beautiful and We Are Who We’ve Been Waiting For. With many handles comes a multi-faceted sound that refuses to be pinned down by a single descriptor: soul, pop, rhythm and blues, even a bit of rock ’n’ roll. The songs travel from the sweetly reggae-infused and addictive “The Light,” with its gorgeous falsetto chorus, to the grim “Homicide Hottie” and “Soul Hole,” caustic soundscapes spiked with low-end menace. Lyrics speak to issues of personal integrity, love, lust and faith, and while not new subjects, they’re couched in sounds to reward a sophisticated ear.
