Gang of Four

Content (Yep Roc)

They mean “content” as a noun, not an adjective and this can only be good. Despite a change on drums and bass, Gang of Four is back in all its fury. Skronk-punk guitarist Andy Gill still manages to sound like nobody else. Singer Jon King belts out the lyrics with both passion and clarity. The rejuvenated Leeds quartet is a bit more existential than Marxist on the first album in 17 years. George Orwell, meet George Clinton. “Who Am I when Everything is Me?” sums up the confusion created by marketing over one’s identity. The bell tolls for thee, passive consumers. An insanely rangy hook stokes “I Party All the Time.” For funk-loving philosophers, it’s the comeback of the century.
