Directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Lionsgate)

Built around the concept of a reality show that gives death-row inmates the opportunity to kill their way to freedom, Gamer is an update of the Schwarzenegger schlockfest The Running Man for the age of first-person shooter games. The twist here is that each con---including Gerard Butler's wrongfully imprisoned John Tillman---is controlled remotely by an individual gamer. Tillman's puppeteer has him on the brink of victory, but the game's evil, eccentric creator (Dexter's Michael C. Hall), has a bloodier ending in mind for his star. Gamer works best when it embraces its B-movie soul, so ignore the clunky philosophical bits about humanity's bloodlust and subservience to technology, savour Hall's campy performance and let the carnage pummel your brain into submission.
