  • Arkells get a little popped.

There's nothing tragic about the Arkells joining The Hip on tour again this weekend (they last toured together in 2009) for a pop-rock/indie-rock/rock on mashup night of Canadian talent and they've come a long way from the crowded campus bars and dorm room hits that won their debut album Jackson Square a Juno Award. The band has sweetened up its sound a little, leaning more heavily on the pop side of the spectrum and 2011's Michigan Left's inspirations in classic '80s pop sound, bands like Ra Ra Riot and Phoenix and a wide range of close relationships result in fun to play live upbeat tracks and make you wanna bounce rhythm—leaving the Springsteen-flavour they started out with in the dust. Their sound is maturing, and if they learn anything from bill-mates The Tragically Hip, it will probably be how to do it well.
