"We've always been attracted to the minimalist side of post-punk," says Thomas Di Ninno. "And that was definitely a starting point for us."

On Thursday at The Bus Stop Theatre, with TORSO, Heaven For Real and Each Other, Victoria, BC's late-80s-inspired rock boys Freak Heat Waves will play from their recently released follow up to 2011 EP, Mission Bay. Recorded mostly in Ymir, BC, the self-titled LP was produced by the late Chris Reimer, guitarist for Calgary's art-noise outfit Women, before his death last February.

"Chris helped us a lot when it came to working out our ideas and [he] gave us some really good input," Di Ninno says, "There was no real process or map for it, it was pretty chaotic.

We were concerned with creating a variety of different sounds, rather than just having an album of tracks that repeated the same kind of idea," he continues. "Overall, we aimed for an aesthetic that was stark, a little harsh and that contrasted space and the density of sound."

Streaming on Bandcamp, the album opens with dark but weightless ambiance carrying through and across ten ulterior-pop songs that Factory Records would be all over. "We like to play in the studio and make music that we wouldn't perform live," says Di Ninno. "We don't want to rock out all the time, sometimes we just want to get weird with soundscapes." But, to be sure, Freak Heat Waves will rock its first Halifax show ever.
