Local filmmaker Michael Fox—of The Living Impaired and pointing-a-fake-gun fame—is back with the Halifax premiere of his new feature Entherance Online, Thursday, August 17, at Park Lane.
Starring Charles T. Conrad, Charlotte Acadia Jewer and Allison Leadley, Entherance Online follows university student John (Conrad), who begins to lose track of his real life when he becomes addicted to an online role-playing game. (There is much brandishing of swords involved.) His grades start to tank, his girlfriend starts heading for the door—especially when she discovers his infatuation with an online tart—and things go south from there as the line between reality and fantasy starts to blur. Get a preview at whitelancefilms.com. The one-night-only screening begins at 7pm and it costs $6 to get in, almost $3 less than You, Me and Dupree—did you hear about Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson?—or that one with the street ballet dancer.
Go north, young people
Love north end Halifax? (Have you seen the buttons?) Love entertainment? How about festival? What if we told you there’s a way to combine all three this week? Well on Thursday August 17, head up to the North End Pub (2776 Gottingen) for a fundraiser in honour of the new Go North festival, a celebration of the neighbourhood happening September 9 and 10. There will be studio tours on the Saturday—guided and un—and on Sunday Gottingen Street will be shut down for a street fair.
But before all that, hit the NEP at 8pm where a mere $5 will get you Chainsaw Lover, Oliver Hugh, Accordion and Typewriter, The Nasal Bandit, Clockwork Musical Instruments, Margaret Spore’s Dance Display, Gary Hanrahan and DJ John Mathews.
On the boards
Long-running community theatre group Dartmouth Players has announced its 2006-07 season. It opens on November 8 with Nunsense, the hilarious musical-within-a-play (it is not based on Sister Act). Tribute drops on January 24, the story of a freewheeling showbiz dude who discovers he has a fatal illness. The spring brings Bus Stop, on April 11, a romantic comedy that takes place in a Kansas City diner during a snowstorm. The season wraps up with Jasper Station, a Norm Foster musical about a handful of passengers on a Vancouver-bound train. For more info call Dartmouth Players at 465-7529 or visit dartmouthplayers.ns.ca.
Also on the Dartmouth theatre trip, Eastern Front Theatre will open on October 25 with the premiere of Michael Melski’s Corvette Crossing, about the men who served in the Canadian Navy during the Battle of the Atlantic. This site-specific show will be performed aboard the HMCS Sackville, currently docked on the Halifax waterfront. Tickets go on sale September 5. Visit easternfront.ns.ca or call 463-PLAY for yours.
Something interesting for last
Our love for local newsgod—and perennial Best Anchor readers’ poll winner—Steve Murphy is no secret. We grew up with his calm, assuring presence and the routine has yet to be broken, decades later. And we’re not the only one—Fredericton’s Kyle Cunjak has started the Steve Murphy Fan Club (motto: bringing recognition to the face of a generation). Visit stevemurphy.ca for a selection of screen-printed t-shirts (in red, light blue and dark blue), trucker hats, underwear and one-inch buttons—boasting his parting catchphrase “From my colleagues on both sides of our camera, thank you and goodnight”—bearing Mr. Murphy’s image.
“The response has been great,” Cunjak emails. “I’ve been selling merch all over New Brunswick, Newfoundland, PEI and Nova Scotia. Ever since I put the site up people have been ordering online as well. I’ve sold more shirts than anything else but the panties are coming in a close second.”
Cunjak’s tribute, however, was born out of convenience rather than a lifelong ambition: “I had some silk-screening equipment and needed something to mass-produce on shirts, hats and panties.”
As far as turning on the six o’clock news and seeing Murph himself sporting his own swag, don’t hold your breath. “Not yet,” says Cunjak of the response. “But a Steve Murphy from Ottawa contacted me about getting the domain name when I’m done with it.”
