Who she is
After moving to Halifax from Toronto three years ago, Ellen Yeung needed a hobby. For a perfect combo of that desire and her interest in fashion, she teamed up with a photographer friend and launched her blog Love By Elle. "I wanted to meet new people and connect with different boutiques and learn about the fashion industry in the city, but it kind of turned into a part-time job for me," says Yeung, who spends her days as Artizia's merchandise manager. It was her swoon-worthy Instagram that drew in Flare—she's now the magazine's east coast Localist at Large.

Local designers she covets
Yeung says one of her favourite things is supporting local shops and designers that she admires. In her outfit in the photo above, she's sporting her current top three—AKG, Maggie MacCormick and Sarah Sears. "I am obsessed with her workmanship," she says of Sears' handmade jewellery. (She's wearing the Criss Cross Ring, Loop Bangle, Piya Choker and Finger Tipper Ring.) Anna Gilkerson's elevated basics speak to Yeung's love of layering and neutrals (she wears the Artist Dress here) and MacCormick (whose Pencil Crop she's wearing) is a designer she's watched since moving here. "She has a different design point of view than anything else I've seen."

Her fashion philosophy
"Don't be afraid to try styles that you would never think of. It's the things you'd never think of pairing together that look the best," says Yeung, who says that though she's had a lifelong interest in fashion, she never pictured making a career of it. "I always say, do what you like. Your style is an expression of your personality. If I want to wear white in winter I will. I don't go by fashion rules, I do what I want."

Her favourite spring trends
"Right now, I'm all about curating my outfits with a peek of neutral suede piece—'70s inspired suede is back in with the A-line skirts, cropped jackets and fun boxy dresses," says Yeung of what she'll be pulling from her closet this season. A forever fan of monochromatic dressing, she's also digging lightweight denim, whether it's wide-leg pants, a pencil skirt or a kimono jacket. And for a touch of romance—the exposed shoulder top. "Try my favourite style—the off-the-shoulder blouse, paired with an airy culotte."
