Flight of the Conchords: The Complete First Season

James Bobin, Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie

Flight of the Conchords: The Complete First Season
Directed by: James Bobin, Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie
HBO Home Video
In the HBO series Flight of the Conchords, New Zealand comedy group Flight of the Conchords (series co-creators Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement) play more naive, more earnest, less successful versions of themselves. On TV, FOTC have one neurotic fan and a manager who works a day job at the New Zealand consulate. Bret and Jermaine's meanderings from one lame gig to another are interspersed with impromptu performances of the odd, funny songs that have made the real Flight of the Conchords internet gods—odes to reformed racist dragons ("Albi the Racist Dragon"), makin' love ("Business Time") and that time Bowie went to space ("David Bowie"). The show is a neat mix of awkward humour, excellent non-sequiturs and hilarious, weirdly rocking songs (Like "Cheer Up, Murray," the band's attempt to comfort their well-meaning manager. "Remember your 33rd birthday, you threw a great big party./And all of your friends were there for you—Jermaine, Greg and me," sings Bret.) Surprisingly, the only time the show's a little weak is during performances of those pre-existing songs that we loved so much on YouTube. The songs written just for the show work so well, plot-wise, that it makes the old standbys feel shoehorned in.
