Fix the city

To the editor,

I'm sorry to write and crap on a couple of interns but the cover story in your last issue was a waste of all your readers' time. You advertise it as several simple ideas to make Halifax a better city and what do the readers get, but a suggestion to fix the pay phone outside the Oxford Theatre. Who cares?

How about some real suggestions to make this city a better place, like improvements to the transit service, or what to do with that eyesore power plant in Tufts Cove? I just think that is what is really lacking around this city is a true vision for its future. We have a unique opportunity to turn Halifax and the entire HRM into the city we really want it to be but we don't have a consensus about what that is.

Furthermore, I think that is what's lacking in the debate over the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It's seven years away but I've heard neither side talk about where the city will be at that time. Maybe we'll be an economically healthy, cosmopolitan city that's ready to host the world or maybe we'll be a backwater ghost town that is just trying to keep its head above the rising ocean waters? Personally, I'm hoping for the former.

Survey Asks

Should council use the yet-to-be-finalized Centre Plan when debating new developments?

  • No, it doesn’t exist yet and is still likely to change
  • Yes, thousands of hours of work and consultation have gone into what’s already assembled
  • Maybe, it really depends on what’s being proposed by the developer
  • I don’t know what the Centre Plan is and do not wish to participate in this poll
