In a field of seven candidates, Fisher took 45 percent of the vote. He received 1,994 votes, while the next closest challenger, Brian Warshick, who held the seat from 2000 to 2004, received just 856 votes.
The new councillor is cousin to Bruce Fisher, the city bureaucrat who is leading the charge for the controversial "tax reform" proposal, which would shift the city away from an assessment-based taxation system and adopt a fee-for-service system instead. There's no indication, however, that Darren Fisher shares Bruce Fisher's views. "We've never discussed it," says the new councillor.
Darren Fisher will officially take office September 29.
