Fat Pig at Plutonium Playhouse

Can love transcend society's attractiveness scale?


The way I figure it, there’s an unwritten law that says people can only date people who are within a couple of points of them on the attractiveness scale. A seven can date a six or even a five, but never a four. (The exception being that power, money or a British accent allows men to date outside the prescribed range.) It explains why husbands are often disillusioned: that pseudo-eight that starved herself while man-hunting has three kids and descends the scale to an overweight, harried six.

If you find my theory offensive, you might want to check out Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig, a brilliant and truthful exploration of society’s shallow appearance-worship.

Helen (Jessica Barry) is sexy, funny and confident. She’s also overweight. Tom (Michael McPhee) is a good-looking, decent guy, a little shallow, but nice all the same. They meet in a crowded restaurant (He eats salad, she scarfs down pizza) and sparks fly. They have something special, but the question remains: does Tom have the strength to weather the scorn heaped on those who flaunt the attractiveness scale?

The performances in this production are outstanding. Both Barry and McPhee are so natural and adorable that it feels as if you’re eavesdropping. Stacy Smith is outstanding as the beautiful, brittle, sharp-as-her-stiletto-heels Jeannie. And you’ll l simply love to hate Matthew Lumley as Tom’s best “friend”, the cruelly funny and sadistic Carter.

Fat Pig is funny, touching, sexy and thought-provoking. Don’t miss it.
