Eyes and the Object is Loosen the Noose Productions’ second offering, and like its first--- last year’s terrific
Rain---it is breathtakingly original. However, unlike
Rain, its narrative is much less comprehensible and accessible. In a nutshell, a brilliant scientist/artist (Mike McLeod) has followed in his cold and distant father’s footsteps and built a machine that transports a “woman” called Portia Blue from another realm. Portia (Margaret Legere) arrives without memory or a heart and brings with her a mischievous and/or malevolent spirit (Melissa Noona) whom the scientist cannot see. Despite her physical beauty, it’s difficult to understand why the scientist is so obsessed with the cold and inhuman Portia. The language tends to the overly poetic, adding confusion where clarification is needed. In fact, the play itself is a little like Portia herself: Lovely to look at, but searching for a heart.– Kate Watson
