Evoke evolves

The Maritime Dance Performance Group presents eight contemporary dance pieces.

In her first year running the Maritime Dance Performance Group, Rhonda Baker's main focus has been making sure the group's 19 dancers worked as a unit. Surprisingly, with six new dancers and the first new director since 1999, teamwork and trust sort of fell into place naturally. "They've become a cohesive group and it really shows in this show how far they've come in that way," says Baker, who choreograped one of nine pieces created for the company. While the eight-minute performance promises to get sort of "wild" in appreciation of human quirks, it also celebrates the family-like connection within the MDPG. "It's really about them taking care of each other, it's hard to have that connection these days," says Baker of the piece. While all of the performances will be contemporary dance, the specific styles and themes have a huge range, showcasing the choreography of Jacinte Armstrong, Cory Bowles, Susanne Chui, Kathleen Doherty, Kelly Horne, Ruth-Ellen Kroll Jackson, Veronique MacKenzie and Rachel Franco.
